Message from the Board of Trustees, March 2022
Given the current and uncertain climate, the Trustees have decided that, with regret, HOUSE Biennial will close in 2022, and is contributing all remaining funds to supporting new and emerging visual artists through Artists Open Houses.
HOUSE was founded by Judy Stevens and Chris Lord in 2008 to position, elevate and celebrate visual arts across the city of Brighton and Hove. Working collaboratively with many of the city’s creative organisations for over a decade, HOUSE unlocked opportunities for new ambitious commissions from established and emerging artists.
With limited dedicated space for presenting, curating and encountering visual arts across the city, HOUSE intentionally sought out new, ‘domestic’ and often unexpected locations for commissions, encouraging curatorial challenge and revealing new sites and encounters with an extraordinary array of contemporary visual arts and artists. HOUSE commissioned nationally acclaimed artists to make new work that was first shown in Brighton. In addition, HOUSE provided an array of cultural events, access, support and professional training for artists, students and emerging curators, as well as new ways to view and experience the city. The civic difference HOUSE has made to many creative lives is its vital and enduring legacy.
This website is now an archive site, kindly hosted by Artists Open Houses. The history of HOUSE Biennial, its numerous artist’s commissions, partnerships and images can all be found on these pages.
